Color Therapy: New Fabrics

This is the time of year when gray skies and gloominess can get to us. I find that colorful fabrics and bright hues can cheer me up. The print above is our newest coated cotton. The material sheds water and wipes clean making it perfect for a makeup bag, wristlet, or any every day, heavy use purse.

Here's another cheerful fabric. This is a lightweight knit that we're using to make our popular infinity scarves. This large-scale floral looks amazing wrapped around your neck, the color and pattern brighten up your face.

Here is the same print in bold hot colors. Fuchsia, orange and turquoise are sure to spread some color therapy when you wear a scarf made with this fabric.

Learn to Make Felt Flowers While Supporting Your Cause

I've always wanted to have crafting workshops in my store, but I've never quite figured out what to teach. Yesterday, listening to news stories marking the two-year anniversary of the Earthquake in Haiti, I hatched a plan.

You may remember our Dahlias for Haiti project, where we made nearly 700 of these felt flowers, and you our wonderful customers bought them for $12 each? Together we raised almost $7000. I think these little flowers can continue to give to many great organizations via how-to classes.

I would like to teach you how to make these fun, happy flowers in workshops at Laura Bee Designs. I will donate 20% of the class fee to the non-profit (501c3) of your choice! These flowers are easy to make and can be used to decorate all kinds of projects. Wouldn't a workshop be a fun way to celebrate a birthday or brighten up a gray winter day?

Here are the particulars:

Classes will be two hours, hosted at my store on Tuesday or Thursday evenings, to be scheduled via email (orderdesk (at) laurabeedesigns.com) or phone (206) 789-4044.
Class fee will be $30 per person, with a minimum of 5 people and a maximum of 10. (Larger groups can be accommodated, as can off-site classes.)
20% of total class fee will be donated via check directly to the non-profit (501c3) of your choice within two weeks of the class date. If you aren't sure of a non-profit to support, we can tell you about some of our favorites. We need to know the name and contact info for the organization before the class date.
Classes are for adults only (over age 13). (Kids classes may be considered in the future.)
Students will leave class with completed flowers plus materials to make more at home (6 flowers total).
No special skills are needed to make these flowers except basic manual dexterity with scissors and hand-sewing needle.

I will work up some fine print regarding payment terms and cancellation policies, but those are the main points. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to schedule a workshop!

New Premium Faux Leather: Graphite

The smoky black of graphite serves as the namesake of our newest premium faux leather. This material has the same matte base with subtle sheen as the tip of your favorite No.2 pencil.

Here is a Clara wristlet made with Graphite and topped with our black and old gold floral ribbon. Super soft and supple, the material is understated yet expensive-feeling.

We started using these new ribbons on holiday season inventory, but I haven't yet shared the trims with you. The rich ribbon above has the holy grail combination of black and brown, making it extra versatile.

This narrower ribbon reminds me of a men's tie. Shades of green, bronze, black and brown combine to create a menswear sensibility.

Sparkling Swarovski

I've been watching Project Accessory and drooling over the dishes of gleaming crystals available to the contestants on the show.

The name is famous, yet frequently spelled wrong. Swarovski crystals are the industry standard in luxe sparkle. You can read their fascinating history here.

The earrings above are a mysterious shade of green that Swarovski calls Olivine. The teardrop-shaped cut of the crystal is called briolette. These have a sterling earwire and cast pewter loops.

Our new infinity scarves have been selling quickly, so I decided to train Debbie "Scissor Hands" on cutting and prepping the tricky sweater knit material for me to sew.

While I stitched away on some bag orders, she got to work. A little while later I turned to see this perfectly pinned stack of scarves ready to go. She told me she, "has a thing about stacking fabric perfectly."

Staying Optimistic with Your Support

As I begin planning our 9 Year Anniversary party, I find myself reflecting on the journey I've taken since opening up shop on the corner of 65th and 20th in Ballard in 2002. At that time, I'd sold bags for about a year at local craft shows and two home boutique shows.

The customers who bought my bags way back then gave me the courage to keep trying, keep designing, and continue building my dream business.

Heartfelt thanks to all of my customers - old and new. Thank you for coming back to shop at LBD for the last nine years. I can't wait to see what the next nine look like.

Along the way some amazing women have worked with me cutting and sewing bags, decorating windows, doing year-end inventory, and above all, custom designing personalized accessories. Thank you to my inspiring staff.

I count my blessings each day that I get to do what I love, and share my obsession with fabric, buttons, and design with customers old and new. It's not always easy; other small business owners know the optimism and fortitude it takes to believe that customers will keep coming day after day, year after year.

I am in this business for the long haul, and plan to make bags and accessories for the next decade and beyond.

I must be honest: Times are tough for everyone, and Laura Bee Designs is not immune to economic downturns. We appreciate your support and purchases now more than ever.

Despite the economic news of late, I'm stocking the store with great stuff - scarves ($18-$30), bracelets ($3-$28), necklaces ($12-$40) and tons of other great gifts arrive each week. Of course, we have lots of new custom bag materials and designs too.

Our customer on this collection was a thoughtful bride who wanted to capture each of her bridesmaid's personalities with her design choices.

Chimp Rescue Donation: Annie & Burrito Love to Eat-o

For the last few years, we've made and donated items to the Chimp Sancutary NW auction each fall. This year I made two of our larger photo notebooks.

The seven chimps who live there were rescued from medical testing and brought to the NW to live out their golden years. You can read more about their amazing stories here.

The photographs the chimps' caregivers post on the sanctuary blog are incredible. I've chosen two of my favorites for this project. (Annie eating broccoli, right, and Burrito considers a coconut, left.)

Introducing Brulee Faux Leather

Our newest glossy faux leather is a warm golden tan color that is complex and delicious. After much brainstorming, Kim came up with the name Brulee, which is perfect.

This color is light and rich at the same time. It's a great alternative to brown, black or gray.

It's always great fun to make something out of a brand new material, and I had a great time sewing this Beatrice and matching wristlet. We've had this green brocade disk ribbon in our collection for some time, but it feels totally fresh and new when paired with Brulee.

While the average bride never wears her wedding dress again, she can carry their bridal bag years into the future, no matter how much waistlines and fashions change.

A special bridal bag can be used on dinner out each anniversary, and ultimately passed along as a 'something borrowed' to future generations.

Wedding season continues, and I've made many wedding collections thus far in 2011. Most focus on bridesmaid gifts, sometimes to the neglect of the bride herself. Even if a bride doesn't carry much in a purse on her special day, she'll need some tissues, lipstick, and her phone and/or camera.

The bride who designed the above bag chose a lovely soft blue lining as her 'something blue.'

Still, sometimes it's important to sit in the moment and enjoy a little sun on my (SPF 50 protected) face.

Dog Days of Summer: Part III

We don't want to neglect our feline friends! Here's a photo pillow that I recently made for a customer to give as a birthday gift. The paprika suede complements the green of the background and the cat's eyes.

Customers often ask me for advice on what image color works best on our custom photo products. They wonder if they should use the color version of an image, or if they should elect to switch the image to black and white or sepia. This pillow is an example of a good use of a color image. The colors are central to the look of the image, and without the green, the cat would read as mostly mid-tone shades of gray.

I think that sepia and black and white are great options for pictures of people especially, because they eliminate the clutter of random clothing colors and keep the focus on the faces.

I will admit that my favorite of our Custom Photo Products is our little notebook. I just love this pocket-sized pad for its cuteness and functionality. We made these with the little composition notepads that can be found at most drugstores and office supply stores, making refills easy.

Here are two that I made recently for a customer. She chose glossy black for the exteriors of each, and a fun pop of color for the interior.

Because she couldn't decide which of these adorable images to use on this special gift, we added a second image in the inside cover of this notebook.

We've been busy with custom photo products lately, especially those featuring our canine friends. Here's a whole batch of checkbooks we made featuring the gorgeous professional photography of Barbara Karant.

In addition to taking portraits of furry clients (above) Barbara is active in Greyhound rescue, and many of the photo products we make for her are designed as fundraisers for this worthy cause.

I'm excited to share our latest materials with you. I've been playing with these for a couple of weeks now, prepping samples and coming up with names. Some of you even helped with naming these via our Facebook page.

These faux leathers are buttery in texture and are softer and more pliable than our regular collection. You can swing by our shop to see them in person, and they can be incorporated into custom design right away.

Tuesdays in Ballard: Give Back & Save

Tuesdays in Ballard is under way, and local businesses are banding together to make summer extra special. This week, the theme is Give Back. The folks at the In Ballard Merchants Association came up with the idea to collect donations for the Ballard Food Bank. We love this idea and we'll have a donation bin tomorrow.

Laura Bee Designs staffer Debbie volunteers each week at the Ballard Food Bank, so I asked her what the most useful donations would be. She told me that hygiene items are always in great demand and short supply. Small sizes of toothpaste and brushes, razors, shampoo and the like make useful donations.

She also said that pet food, especially cat food, is much needed for those who struggle to feed their pets during tough times. Big bags of dry food work great; the bank repackages them into smaller quantities to give to many pet owners.

Even if you can't make it in to donate tomorrow, we hope that you'll consider donating to this wonderful local organization in the future.

I'm definitely not a food blogger. However, in case you're thinking of visiting my shop and need some grub, I thought I'd tell you about a few of my favorite neighborhood eateries.

First up is Malena's Tacos. Just down the street from our shop, this place is cheap, delicious and friendly. The ingredients are simple and fresh.

I always get the veggie tostada ($5.75 with tax and huge). However, friends report that the tacos, burritos, etc are also quite delicious.

The weather guy is predicting a sunny 70 degree day tomorrow, and that's perfect for our sidewalk sale.

Kim and I spent today sorting, bagging, and assembling good stuff to sell. I have so much good stuff, I can't possibly get to everything (more ideas than time) so I figured it's time send some of this fun stuff out into the world for others to use.

Featured Bag: Lovebirds Harriet

Lately we've been selling more ready-made bags than ever. While our specialty is custom bags, sometimes instant gratification is the way to go. We always have many bags for sale in our shop, so I thought I'd start featuring in-stock bags here for a bit of virtual window-shopping.

First up is this Harriet bag, which is perfect for summer days. It features a colorful lovebird ribbon atop an espresso brown pebble flap. The body of the bag features an exterior zipper pocket, and is bright cobalt blue. The raspberry pink lining provides a bright interior pop. $106, also includes cell phone pocket.

We Don't Make These Bags (But we love them)

We've been selling fashion-forward reusable shopping bags for several years now. We prefer the kind that you can stow inside your (Laura Bee) bag so that you don't accidentally leave it at home or in your car.

Recently a loyal customer told me about Flip & Tumble bags, which come in bright rip-stop nylon, and collapse into cozy little balls pouches that can also be used for juggling demos at the farmer's market.

This month marks ten years since I sold my first handmade purse. I'm eternally thankful for the steady support! As Laura Bee Designs grows, It is always my goal to keep our customer service personalized.

With that in mind, I'm introducing a couple of new things into the custom handbag mix.

Appointments
Drop in design service has been our bread and butter for years, and we'll continue to welcome spontaneous custom orders. However, when the design area of our shop is busy, we will give priority to those who have made appointments in advance.

It's important to me that everyone designing gets full service and space to look at all of the materials and options.

Appointments will be especially helpful for:

Saturday and Sunday design
Parties of three or more
Bridal collection design sessions

Simply call us at 206-789-4044 to book a time. Feeling spontaneous on a Saturday or Sunday? Swing by and we'll make it work.

Design Hours
We are open for custom design sessions during our store hours. Design sessions must begin at least one hour before we close for the night.

Custom Bag Design Guidelines and Tips

The Laura Bee Designs custom process is our way of sharing our love of textiles and design with you, our customer. You don’t have to know anything about fashion or design to have fun creating a bag at our shop.

To make your experience the best it can be, we offer the following suggestions:

Make an appointment. We strive to give you our full attention when you are designing your bag. If you plan to visit on our busiest days (Saturday and Sunday), or with a group of three or more, it is helpful to us if you make an appointment in advance. We have limited design space, and appointments help us provide you with the best customer service.

Allow one hour for bag design. Some people make decisions quickly, and others prefer a more methodical approach. Be sure to arrive an hour before our closing time.

Arrive ready to make decisions. You will have the most fun designing your bag if you are prepared to make a series of decisions about fun things like colors, patterns, and pockets. Make sure you aren’t hungry, tired, or in an indecisive mood. Trust your instincts and have fun with the process. Don’t worry, we will help you through step by step process, and will guide you through your decisions along the way.

Bring the things you want to carry. If you want to have certain items in your new bag, bring them with you so that you can see how they fit in our various shapes. Customers report this step helps greatly in the design process. Consider how you will use this bag; every day bags have different requirements than evening bags in terms of size, color, and durability.

Consider bringing an advisor. Do you have a friend or relative who understands your style and aesthetics? You may find it helpful to bring that person with you to help you design your bag.

Alternatively, fly solo. The adage of, “Too many cooks in the kitchen,” can definitely apply to our design process. Some customers prefer to come alone to stay focused, rather than bringing a group. Of course, our expert staff will guide you through the process either way.

Kids rule! Since we opened in 2002, we’ve gotten to know many of our customers’ children. We’ve watched them grow up from tiny babies into smart kids ready to buy wallets to carry allowance money.

Through the years, we’ve noticed that childhood attention spans don’t always last through the custom design process. Restless kids can distract Mom from the fun of design, so we provide a basket of toys to help.

Many mothers tell us they enjoy some “me” time in our shop while designing on their own, so choose to leave the kids at home. (Think of it like a purse-designing spa day.)

If you have an infant, consider bringing a stroller or separate seat (rather than a sling) so that you can pull fabrics, materials and enjoy the full experience. Or bring a friend to help you.

We adore dogs but… Pooches and custom designs don’t mix. Most dogs would rather be outside doing dog things. Plus, our shop pug Otis prefers to be the canine king at Laura Bee Designs.

Grumpy Owl, Car Photo Studio, & Clipboard Collecting

If, like me, you've been thrift-shopping ever since the 1980s there was a Hadassah thrift shop across the street from your junior high school, you might have figured this out already. It's really hard to stop. There is always a treasure around the corner.

To get my shopping fix, I often look for one or two special things for my collection, rather than combing the whole store. Take clip boards: they are usually less than $1 and abound in the oft-neglected office supply section of your local Goodwill or Salvation Army.

I especially love small ones (hard to find), as well as old-looking versions, like the board above (75 cents). I use these what taking pictures for my website and to clip purse orders, to do lists, and more in handy locations.

Another way to curb the collecting habit is to sneak a picture of a find in its thrift store habitat, and then (this is the hard part) leave it there. That's how I made the Grumpy Owl, above, part of my digital only collection. Doesn't his smile just kill you?

PS - If you do end up buying something, I high recommend photographing it inside your car, as I did with the clipboard shot. (Fakey aged and Poloroid-ed with this Android application.) Somehow the natural light in a car seems to be the perfect little photo studio for a quick shot.

Pug Celebration this Weekend

A customer I hadn't seen in a while came in over the weekend. She told me that because of shop dog Otis, her family now has two pugs! Apparently, she and her husband met Otis years ago and loved him so much that they decided their family pets would be pugs too. The pug mom in me is proud.

Otis and I do some volunteer work on the side for our favorite animal-oriented not-for-profit, Seattle Pug Rescue. We love spreading the word about rescue animals in general and pugs in specific. Even if aren't a pug person, or if your dog isn't a rescue, you can still support rescues! Spread the word and tell your friends.

Thank you wonderful customers for supporting our recent fundraiser effort: Buttons for Japan. Together we raised $2009 for Mercy Corps' efforts to aid Japan after the March earthquake and tsunami. That means we made 1148 buttons out of origami paper and shipped them all around the country.

Glass Jewelry Handmade by Lisa Sparks

Glass artist Lisa Sparks is inspired by nature. Her simple sepia images are embedded in luscious glass chunks.

We have several beautiful necklaces and brooches by this Los Angeles based crafter. The larger pendants, such as 'Fir Trees' above are $28.

Sparks calls these smaller pieces her 'critter pendants.' Shown larger than actual size above, the mustang is under one inch square.

Recently a customer from California asked me to send her a few images of black bag options. She wanted to order a fairly neutral black-based Helen Hobo.

I pulled a few prints from our collection, and photographed them with both glossy and matte black faux leather.

These images offer a quick peek at our design process. You can see how simple changes, like matte (left) to glossy (right), alter the look of the combination.

Japan Fundraiser: We're Off to a Great Start

Our Buttons for Japan fundraiser is a moving example of the magic of the internet. I posted the buttons on our website here at around 10 pm last night. Then I posted a link on our Facebook page. Orders came in almost immediately.

I shot over an email to the fine folks at our neighborhood blog, MyBallard.com. By the time I checked my email the next morning, the article had been posted. More orders came in through our website.

Meanwhile, Debbie opened our shop at 10 am and people who had seen our online announcement stopped by right away in search of the buttons. Some bought big batches of 40 or more to give to clients. Others bought 4 for $8 and talked with us about watching the news crying for the suffering in Japan.

The good news is we raised over $600 on day one of our fundraiser. The bad news is the situation continues and seems to be getting worse. I urge you to visit the excellent Mercy Corps website to read about the crisis and the work being done there.

One blog entry talks about the charity bringing satellite phones for the displaced to call their loved ones to tell them they are alive. How simple; how huge.

Thank you for your support thus far. Whether you choose to buy buttons from us, or donate directly, your support, however large or small, is part of a greater good that will help many.

San Diego Wedding: Avocado, Mandarin, Sunflower

Our customer is a former neighborhood regular who now lives in San Diego. She emailed to ask us to create a custom wristlet collection featuring her wedding colors.

She asked us to choose the avocado, mandarin and sunflower embellishments for her eleven wristlets.

I love the cheerful colors and think they will look amazing when carried at a Southern California wedding later this year.
